National Service Scheme (NSS) – Thiagarajar College of Engineering

The National Service Scheme (NSS) at Thiagarajar College of Engineering functions with two active NSS units, each comprising 100 student volunteers. The units work collectively to promote social responsibility, leadership, and community engagement among students. Through structured programs and community-based initiatives, NSS at TCE provides students with opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society while developing essential life skills and a strong sense of civic duty.

Major Activities

1. NSS Special Camp

The NSS Unit of Thiagarajar College of Engineering organizes a seven-day Special Camp annually in adopted villages, focusing on rural development, cleanliness, health awareness, digital literacy, environmental sustainability, and social welfare initiatives. Through community surveys, sanitation and cleanliness drives, health and medical camps, awareness programs, educational sessions for school students, and environmental activities, NSS volunteers actively engage with villagers to address local needs. The camp strengthens community bonding while enabling volunteers to develop leadership, teamwork, and social responsibility, truly reflecting the NSS motto, “Not Me, But You”

2. Blood Donation Camp

A Blood Donation Camp was organized by the NSS in collaboration with YRC and Rajaji Hospital to promote voluntary blood donation and create awareness about its life-saving importance. The camp witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and staff, resulting in the successful collection of 255 units of blood. All donors were medically screened, and the donation process was carried out safely under professional supervision, with active support from NSS volunteers.

3. Trekking and Adventure Activities

An enriching trekking was organized to provide volunteers with a refreshing break from routine and an opportunity to connect with nature. The experience offered scenic trails and a calm environment, encouraging physical fitness and mental well-being.

The trek also provided insights into the cultural and historical significance of the region while fostering teamwork, interaction, and bonding among the volunteers. The enthusiastic participation and collective spirit made the activity both educational and memorable. Overall, the trekking activity reflected the core values of the National Service Scheme by promoting adventure, unity, and holistic development among student volunteers.

4. TQI (Talent Quest for India Trust)

As part of the TQI initiative, NSS volunteers conducted interactive learning sessions for 9th and 10th standard government school students . The classes focused on enhancing students’ soft skills, communication abilities, confidence, and positive mindset through engaging and student-friendly teaching methods.

The sessions created an enthusiastic learning environment and were well received by both students and school faculty. This initiative reflected the commitment of NSS volunteers towards educational outreach and student empowerment.

5. Swachhata hi seva Activities

Under the Swachhata Hi Seva initiative, NSS volunteers participated in activities promoting cleanliness and environmental responsibility. Interactive campus-based programs helped students identify areas requiring maintenance and encouraged a sense of ownership towards a clean campus.

Volunteers also took a cleanliness pledge, reaffirming their commitment to hygiene and sustainable practices. These initiatives strengthened awareness and responsibility towards building a cleaner and healthier community.

6. Independence Day Celebrations

NSS volunteers participated in the Independence Day celebrations, displaying discipline, unity, and patriotic spirit during the March Past at the flag hoisting ceremony. Their coordinated performance reflected respect for national values and the spirit of service upheld by the National Service Scheme.

The volunteers also supported the smooth conduct of the event by maintaining decorum and assisting with crowd management, making the celebration meaningful and memorable.

Achievements

The TCE NSS Unit received the State Level Award for “Best NSS Unit.”

Dr. S. Siva Ilango, Programme Officer, was awarded “Best NSS Programme Officer (2022–2023)” at the University Level among colleges affiliated under Anna University, Chennai.

Mr. Gowthaman (B.E., EEE) was honored with the “Best NSS Volunteer – State Level” award.

TCE secured 3rd Prize for organizing the most blood donation camps, awarded by Rajaji Government Hospital, Madurai.
