The Department of Chemistry at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, established in 1957, is approved by AICTE and accredited by NAAC, and serves as a recognized research center for Ph.D. programs under Anna university. With a team of thirteen highly qualified faculty members, all holding Ph.D. degrees, the department plays a vital academic role by offering core courses in Chemistry and Environmental Science for first-year students, along with six interdisciplinary elective courses for higher semesters. It promotes collaborative and interdisciplinary research, with students from various engineering branches undertaking project work in its well-equipped laboratories. The department provides industrial consultancy and testing services and is credited with obtaining the institution’s first patent for the innovative “Plastic Tar Road” technology, followed by a second patent related to alternative fuel development using waste plastics.
It also hosts three Centers for Excellence - the Centre for Hydrogen Energy Research and Centre of Excellence for Environment Awareness and Education and centre of excellence for sustainability. The department also hosts an EIACP centre, TCE–EIACP Program Centre – Resource Partner (PC-RP), supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, focusing on environmental awareness, sustainability, and clean technologies related to Plastic Waste Management. The department is equipped with four advanced laboratories—the Polymer/Plastic Tar Road Research Lab, Functional Materials Lab, Materials Research Lab, and Chemistry Lab for UG practical sessions. Major research thrusts include water and wastewater treatment, plastic waste management, environmental studies, corrosion science, solar energy harvesting, molecular modeling, bio-based polymers, and the development of sustainable materials and fuels.
